The actress Arletty, as Garance, in Children of Paradise

I’ll return to updating here shortly, over the weekend.  I haven’t forgotten you. It’s just that when I said earlier that novels sometimes ate everything in the room, this should be said to include blog posts.

The above is a favorite image of the French actress Arletty, as Garance, the courtesan in Children of Paradise. It’s the single convincing portrayal I’ve found of a courtesan in film as I’ve researched The Queen of the Night. Most others go wide as to these grandes horizontales of late 19th Century France, failing to depict the very real strength of these many of these women.  The film is a classic, shot without permission during the Nazi occupation of France. It must be seen.

  1. Am happy to hear you’ll be back at the blog, but happier still that the time away means a new novel for your readers soon (or soonish, as publishing goes . . . When is your pub date?) Meanwhile, for the latest on courtesans of a sort, check out my friend Jillian Lauren’s memoir Some Girls: My Life in a Harem . . . Out this month. 🙂
