What follows is an excerpt from an alumni interview with a prospective student [easily, I might add, one of the most impressive young women I’ve ever met].
Me: Tell me about some of the challenges you’ve had to overcome while living here.
Chinese International Student: Well, I think mostly, misconceptions. About China, about the US. For example, people here don’t understand, why we do not mix religion and democracy. I think it is very dangerous to democracy to mix religion with it.
Me: But of course, here, it’s supposed to be separate.
CIS and myself: [nervous laughter]
CIS: I mean, “In God We Trust”, as a national motto, that’s very dangerous to a democracy.
Me: You’re telling me.
